Small Pet Select is a family-owned brand focused on thoughtfully selected hay, safe bedding, and toys built around the idea that small pets deserve the same care and quality as any other family member.
The challenge
Small Pet Select already had strong products and a loyal customer base. But discovery behavior has been shifting: pet parents increasingly start with AI to compare options, validate safety, and narrow down what to buy, especially in chicken and toys categories.

On December 1, 2025, Small Pet Select’s AI visibility was 50.6%, but they were ranking low across many high-intent topics. In practice, that meant they were not consistently being surfaced or cited when customers asked AI tools the exact questions that often precede a purchase decision.

The approach
U&AI partnered with Small Pet Select to align the brand with how pet parents actually ask questions in AI and reverse engineering what already works.
The strategy centered on:
• Identifying AI presence gaps by category and intent (comparison, safety checks, “specific for my guinea pig” questions, and category prioritization)
• Strengthening trust signals AI relies on
• Making product and category information easier for AI to interpret & reference
• Improving performance in categories where AI hadn’t confidently connected the brand yet (like chicken feed and toys)

The process
We worked with Small Pet Select through four steps:
* Assessing AI visibility and citation performance across priority categories and pet-parent question themes
* Optimizing and creating content for AI-driven discovery
* Improving visibility around categories AI platforms hadn’t yet connected with the brand
* Measuring results and iterating based on performance


Key results (Dec 1, 2025 → Feb 1, 2026)
• AI visibility increased from 50.6% to 69.9%
• Reached #1 rank for visibility
• Moved from 3rd → 1st in the chicken feed category
• Moved from 5th → 1st in toys for small pets
• Became #1 in citations, surpassing major platforms (including Reddit and Chewy)

Products appearing as instant purchase on GPT shopping for 66.3% of related conversations.

Sales impact
AI-driven shopping behavior and revenue increased.

By adapting to how pet parents now research and choose products through AI, Small Pet Select moved from partial visibility to category leadership, earning the #1 citation spot and #1 visibility across chosen categories, turning AI discovery into meaningful commercial momentum.
